"We Don't Expect Miracles Tomorrow": Lewis Hamilton Has No Chance Against Max Verstappen Even After Giving W14 a Year Claims Toto Wolff

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had a pretty underwhelming qualifying session. The seven-time world champion P7, whereas his teammate got a slightly better result and would start P6 on Sunday.

Before the qualifying, there were accusations of Mercedes for sandbagging yet again. However, their results on Saturday don’t show a positive turn of events for them.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff claims his side has no chance against Max Verstappen and Red Bull even after giving a year to their 2023 machinery. Nevertheless, they look forward to the car development that could still give them good results.

Wolff started by saying Max Verstappen and Red Bull are too far ahead. Therefore, he isn’t optimistic about the team coping in the new F1 season’s first race on Sunday.

“Its not like we have to just put the car in the bin, there’s so much to learn still from the car and [improvements] that will be relevant even if we put bigger side pods on the car and change the concept,” said Wolff to F1 media.

The season is definitely long, and Mercedes can cope with defending their P3 in the constructors’ standings. Aston Martin probably would be their biggest challenger, who are rising dramatically in the grid order.

Lewis Hamilton can’t go for the eighth

The 2022 season ended with Mercedes hoping for a better season in the following year after they won in Brazil, the penultimate round of the last season. Hamilton, who is currently undergoing his contract extension negotiation, would probably have to wait another year before he can fight for the championship again.

Because Wolff, during the post-qualifying interview, confessed that Mercedes is now looking at a 3-4 years window. That timeline is until the new engine regulations popped up.

Reminding the readers that when new engine regulations came up last time, Mercedes went on to win eight titles in a row. So, they could be eyeing a similar feat.
