F1 considered ‘single lap’ qualifying
F1 is considering a lot of changes in order to make the sport a little more ‘fan friendly’ and make the sport a lot more global than it presently is.
The technical aspect of the sport has been known to traditionally drive away new fans, as the sport becomes a little too complex for them to understand.
Liberty Media and the FIA are working hand in hand in order to come up with innovative ways to hook the younger generation to the sport.
William’s Paddy Lowe has revealed that a new qualifying format has also been discussed, as quoted by Racefans.
Lowe also gave feedback on the new 18 inch tyres that are going to kick in from the 2021 season.
“If [that] drives us towards tyres that have a much wider window to operate in, that could be a good thing,” he said.
“I know at the same time they are talking about moving qualifying perhaps to formats where there are [fewer] laps, more criticality around doing single laps. And again, if that’s around tyres that aren’t prepared with blankets that would drive us towards tyres with a wider window which I think would be a good thing for the sport.” he added.
It was between 2003 and 2006 that a single lap qualifying format was used , one which was replaced by the current qualifying format.
Lowe was a fan of the track blankets as according to him it added to the spectacle of Formula 1.
“I quite like the spectacle of a grid with all the equipment, including tyre blankets,” he said.
“I think that’s part of the impression that Formula One gives of being a very technical sport, the pinnacle of motor racing, so I would miss it from that point of view.” he concluded.
