Mumbai Indians‘ batters failed to turn up to the occasion to accept a challenge of chasing down a 208-run target in Indian Premier League 2023 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad tonight. In what would’ve been one of the highest successful run-chases in the history of the IPL, it had almost ended up becoming one of the biggest defeats for MI.

An innings bereft of any sort of momentum from the start, opening batters Rohit Sharma (2) and Ishan Kishan (13) scoring a combined of 15 (29) never allowed them to be in a position to dominate in the powerplay. In addition to not contributing in terms of runs, Sharma and Kishan consuming a lot of balls was even bigger a mistake for batters of their potential.

The likes of Tilak Varma (0), Cameron Green (33) and Tim David (0) getting out within 16 balls around the halfway mark further added to their woes at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday.

Reduced to 90/6 in 13 overs, Mumbai were required to execute a herculean task of needing 118 runs in seven with only four wickets in hand. A 25-ball 45-run seventh-wicket partnership between Nehal Wadhera (40) and Piyush Chawla (18) saved Indians from a lot of embarrassment despite never looking to be in a position to win the match.

If truth be told, MI were also let down by their bowlers in this match. The simple fact that they have leaked 200+ runs for the second time in a row doesn’t speak highly about the form of their bowlers.

Having won five and lost two out of their first seven matches, defending champions GT have jumped to the second spot on the points table. Mumbai, on the other hand, are at the seventh position on the back of three wins and four losses thus far.
