“Magic Johnson Said He’d Give Me $1,000,000 To Play, So Did Charles Barkley”: Michael Jordan Once Joked About Financial Pressures of Playing in 1992
There have been debates about the best basketball teams ever assembled, and over the years, only a few teams have made the cut. However, these teams will look like a bunch of amateurs when pitted against the 1992 USA Olympics National team. Such was the lineup of superstars assembled, and gold was a guarantee. For them, the Olympics was more about the opportunity to earn global endorsements than a patriotic assignment. ‘The Dream Team’ as they were famously known, boasted of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird.
It was the first time NBA players were allowed to participate in the Olympics, and their expectations were sky-high. Not in terms of achieving a gold medal. That was a surety. It was more toward the financial gains they would stand to make by exposing their talents on a global stage. Chock full of superstars, the team not only took the Olympics by storm, but also the world.
Michael Jordan knew the financial benefit of the Olympics
Michael Jordan was already a household name in the United States come 1992. Fresh off his first NBA championship, the Chicago Bulls superstar was ready to take his stardom to another level.
And what better way to do it than showcasing your talents at the most significant global sporting event? However, there were concerns about how his sponsors would feel about this participation. Here is a quote by Jordan from an article in Sports Illustrated:
“Then, too, there is the lure of lucrative foreign endorsements and more worldwide fame. Jordan says the companies that are already paying him millions did not pressure him to play. ‘Magic said he’d give me $1 million to play, and so did Charles, so I figured that’s $2 million right there,’ said Jordan jokingly. Perhaps only he and Magic truly understand the earning potential that a spectacular Olympic performance would guarantee.”
Brands like McDonald’s, Coke, and Nike were associated with Michael and were paying him exorbitant amounts of money. The thought of rival competition from foreign brands must have crossed their minds. Jordan knew it and deflected the question by joking about it. He further hilariously stated that his teammates were willing to pay him a million dollars if he decided to play in the Olympics. His statement also put into perspective the large amount of money NBA players earned.
Jordan and his teammates’ global impact
The Dream Team was a collection of the best players from the biggest franchises in the most talented basketball league in the world. Michael Jordan, Lary Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, and the list gets better and better. They lit up the world with their performance in Barcelona and left them longing for more.

His impact on the game was so high that he is often credited for putting the NBA on the world map. Apart from the Olympics, his Paris tour for an exhibition game while playing for Chicago Bulls also helped popularize the league.
