Dennis Rodman Discusses Ex-Wife Annie Bakes’ Role in His Infamous Suicide Attempt
Dennis Rodman is considered to be one of the best rebounders of all time. But he also led an eccentric lifestyle and was part of several tumultuous relationships that made headlines. His marriage with Annie Bakes in 1992 was really an important phase in Rodman’s life.
In the year of his wedding, Rodman was earning around $2.35 million with the Detroit Pistons. However, when he learned that his wife was with him for monetary benefits, the thought of the same devastated Rodman. A further nail in the coffin was when Rodman figured his wife was cheating with one of his Pistons teammates.
The heartbreak and betrayal drove Rodman to potentially take the extreme step of ending his life with a shotgun. In what has now became an infamous incident, the Pistons star was found asleep in his car parked in a parking lot with a shotgun to his mouth.
During a sit-down with DJ Vlad, Rodman discussed Bakes’ role in the potential suicide attempt. He revealed that he fell asleep listening to Pearl Jam’s music in his car and could never attempt to end his life. In fact, Rodman claimed that the music had actually saved his life.
The five-time NBA Champion was a little uneasy when Vlad brought up Bakes’ role in the incident. He didn’t deny it, but claimed that he had moved past it long ago and doesn’t wanna put anyone on blast now.
Rodman’s life was at its glorious peak when he met Annie Bakes. However, all was not well with Rodman and Bakes after they married in 1992. In his book Bad As I Wanna Be, Rodman revealed how he was tricked into marrying Bakes for his then-net worth.
Discussing his married life, Rodman wrote:
“I think I GOT USED in the marriage. I think I GOT TRICKED into marriage. I think IT WAS A SETUP from the start. I got used within the system. There’s a woman who supposedly loves you, and then all of a sudden she turns around and tries to take every dime you’ve got. Why? Because it belongs to her all of a sudden, after eighty-two days of marriage? No, it does not.”
Rodman also said that Bakes was cheating on him with one of his Pistons teammates. This caused severe heartbreak to the Worm and he contemplated suicide.
However, thankfully, he didn’t pull the trigger and is now leading a much more fulfilled life.
