“I am the villain”: LeBron James quashed rumors of ‘beef’ with Kobe Bryant in 2008 despite being criticized by The Black Mamba

A potential beef between LeBron James and Kobe Bryant has often been talked about in the media, for obvious reasons. Two of the most obvious choices for the GOAT claim, both Kobe and LeBron were seen as potential successors to Michael Jordan towards the start of their careers. Bryant once criticized LeBron for his tendency to avoid physical contact at the rim. However, the two in 2008 quashed rumors of a rift in a joint interview back in 2008, according to a video posted by the Inspired By Hoops YouTube channel.

Despite an obvious rivalry and being pitted against each other by the media, the two developed a friendship over the years. The late Kobe Bryant had a similar approach and never-say-die attitude that LeBron has shown over the years. Despite being “2 alphas” Kobe and LeBron had enough in common to emerge as genuine friends.

The interview saw LeBron explain how Kobe was unfairly targeted by the media because of his personality. Bryant was known to be highly-focussed on winning and would often refuse to speak to the media. LeBron’s statement made it obvious that he had a lot of respect for Bryant:

“I think Kobe gets unfair things put on him because he is not so outspoken or what everybody wants him to be. You know, he’s not smiling all the time, so he must be a bad person. Once you get to know him, he is definitely someone you would want to be around all the time.”

However, both LeBron and Kobe had a similar approach and passion for the game. Bryant went on to explain how the two merely showed it in different ways. After initially talking about how he was portrayed as the “villain,” Bryant claimed that it was fun for him to be around LeBron:

“It’s fun for me to be around and see that kind of enthusiasm and the passion he has for the game. We both have the same passion, we just show it in different ways. So it’s fun for me to be around that, and you know, it’s fun.”

It is clear that despite the way the media portrayed their relationship, the two were on friendly terms. Kobe and LeBron are two of the greatest players and role models for the NBA of the current generation and were friends with each other.

LeBron vowed to continue Kobe’s NBA legacy after his untimely death

Kobe’s unfortunate death in January 2020 brought forth a plethora of reactions from NBA superstars. This included LeBron James, who promised to continue his legacy in a heartwarming Instagram post.

James talked about how he had only recently spoken to Kobe and could not believe the news. He extended gratitude to Bryant’s family, and was very moved when he heard the news.

James also talked about the brotherhood he shared with Kobe, and asked him for strength. James claimed that he would do everything to continue his legacy and asked Kobe to watch over him.
