“Makes Those Races More Special”: William Byron on What NASCAR Gets It Right About the Cup Series Calendar

Over the years NASCAR has been constantly experimenting with the Cup Series schedule to make things more exciting. We are slowly starting to see the introduction of more road courses as well as the inclusion of the first-ever street course in Chicago. At the present moment, there are a total of 36 proper race weekends on the schedule which at times might get hectic for the drivers and crew members.

Recently, while speaking during a NASCAR insider roundtable video, Hendrick Motorsports driver, William Byron was asked about his thoughts regarding the 36-week racing schedule currently used in the Cup Series.

William Byron explains the one thing NASCAR does right with its schedule

Subsequently, Byron responded, “For me, I feel like 36 weeks is it’s a lot like it’s a grind for all of us for the team guys. You throw a couple exhibition races in there you know I think that the balance is good.”

He added, “I’ve enjoyed having some more road courses I think the street race is awesome this year. I really enjoyed that. The spectacle of it. Selfishly I think, I think 32 events, would be a good number for, I feel like. “

“But I do like how we’ve started to go to more one-time venues and mix up the schedule and not have so many, you know, two weekends at Richmond or Pocono. It makes those races more special. Like Pocono to me has gotten way more special. So that’s kind of what I look at.”

William Byron has been having a career-best season

It is difficult to argue that Byron is currently having his career-best season with six wins on the board and a solid chance for a fight for the season title. Out of his six wins, one of them came at a road course event in Watkins Glen. Aside from the wins, he also raked up a total of 17 top-10 finishes, five top-5s, three poles, and 895 laps led.

With his current tally of points, he sits atop the playoff leaderboard and has a good chance to take the battle all the way to Phoenix in a couple of weeks.

Looking at how well and consistently he has been able to drive through the past events, fans look forward to seeing what lies in store for William Byron. The Hendrick Motorsports #24 will certainly have fierce competition in the form of Denny Hamlin and a few others at the championship four events when he eventually gets there.
