Robert Wickens issues statement regarding news of him being paralysed

Robert Wickens suffered a horrific crash in Pocono, one where he suffered damages to his spinal cord, legs and arms.

Wickens had rammed into the side fence during the IndyCar race, with his car rising up into the air and spinning back onto the race track after colliding with the side fence.

Wickens has been working on his recovery ever since, while posting regular updates about how he is trying to get back on his feet.

He came up with such a video yesterday, wherein he also used the word paraplegic, one that caused quite a stir on social media, as a lot of people ended up labelling Wickens as ‘paralysed’.

Wickens’ post yesterday confirmed that he was paraplegic, as he has next to no nerve sensation in his legs, but his upper body is working as well as earlier.

The IndyCar driver has been working on getting those legs to work again and is confident that with time and with proper assistance he should be able to walk again.

Did my first slide transfer as a paraplegic today. My upper body is getting stronger and stronger and hopefully I’ll be able to do it unassisted soon. I’ve only been posting videos of the small movement in my legs, but the reality is I am far away from walking on my own. Some people are a bit confused with the severity of my injury, so I wanted let you know the reality of it. Now, Wickens has come out and clarified the word paraplegic, one that isn’t quite well understood by the lay man.

Wickens’ road to recovery is going to be a tough one but he is working hard in order to first get back to his feet and maybe, just maybe get back on the race track as well.

As fans all we can do is keep him in our prayers and hope that one day he can get back to entertaining us on the race track
