Dhoni on skipping Ranji Trophy: “Individual preferences should not be criticized”
Dhoni on skipping Ranji Trophy: The former Indian captain was vocal about why skipping domestic cricket shouldn’t be criticized.
Nearly a month ago, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had expressed his odds regarding current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni and opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan skipping in the ongoing season of the Ranji Trophy. Former India batsman Mohinder Amarnath had also opined regarding the same.
While Dhawan was on a break post the T20I series against Australia, Dhoni hadn’t played any form of cricket since the ODI series against West Indies. Gavaskar felt that the players who were not part of the Test team should play in India’s premier domestic competition in a bid to stay in good form.

While Dhoni had kept his silence on the topic till now, he opened up last night during the launch of former BCCI President N. Srinivasan’s book named ‘Defying the Paradigms’. Dhoni cited keeping players injury-free as the reason for them skipping domestic cricket.
“It is important to safeguard players. We have to make the domestic circuit slightly less challenging [in terms of the itinerary] for the individual. Moreover, it is important to be not too critical of T20 cricket and also individual preferences. Individual preferences should not be criticised,” Dhoni was quoted as saying during the event.

Dhoni went on to praise the current lot of Indian fast bowlers and stated that he is ‘very happy’ with the way cricket is going in India. “I am very happy with the way our cricket is going. See, the fast bowlers how they are bowling in the Test arena. To win a Test match, we need 20 wickets whether it is spinners or the fast bowlers.
“As of now, we have a bowling attack that is taking 20 Test wickets every match, which means we have the chance of winning every Test match that we are play,” he added.
