MS Dhoni passes emotional statement on being nicknamed Thalla by CSK fans
MS Dhoni passes emotional statement: Chennai Super Kings was vocal about the unconditional love which he receives from CSK fans at Chepauk.
Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has led his team to yet another victory in the Indian Premier League. Having registered their ninth victory of the season, Chennai are currently at the top of the table with as many as 18 points under their belt.
Despite vice-captain Suresh Raina was CSK’s highest run-scorer tonight, it was Dhoni’s frenzy in the last two overs which propelled the hosts to 179/4 in 20 over after being put in to bat. The 37-year old cricketer scored 44* (22) with the help of four fours and three sixes.
Performing his duties behind the stumps, Dhoni affected two lightening-quick stumping dismissals to send back Delhi Capitals all-rounder Chris Morris (0) and captain Shreyas Iyer (44). Being asked about his unconventional wicket-keeping approach, Dhoni credited his tennis-ball days for the same.
“It’s something that has come from tennis ball cricket. Still you need to do the basics right and then graduate to the next level. If you want to keep like that, you may commit a lot of mistakes. It’s important to stick to the basics,” Dhoni was quoted as saying.
“I don’t know. For me it’s a very good talking point for the next league game,” Dhoni answered when asked about if he has the fastest hands in the world.

There is no hiding to the fact that Dhoni has a massive fan-following in Tamil Nadu. The affection which he receives from his fans in Chennai is arguably at level with what he receives from his home fans in Ranchi. Being asked about his nickname ‘Thala’, Dhoni considered it to be “very special”.

“I have always said it’s very special to get that kind of a nickname. It’s a big nickname that they have given me. It feels really special. I didn’t realize that it was part of the first CSK song. The way I got accepted and the whole of Tamil Nadu — don’t call my name, they call me ‘Thala’. It’s very nice and they have always supported us,” Dhoni concluded.
