Arsene Wegner Backs Arsenal To Defeat Villareal: Wegener was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s forthcoming Europa League semi-final with Villareal on Thursday

Taking on Villareal in the first round of their Europa League semi-final last week, Arsenal couldn’t have endured a worse day on the pitch.

Not only did the club slip to a 2-1 defeat in Spain but also lost Dani Ceballos after the midfielder was issued a red card in the second half. It rules out the player’s participation this Thursday night as the two clubs lock heads for a shot at making it into the competition’s marquee final.

Wegner Bats For Arsenal

Despite chasing a deficit, Arsenal have received much needed backing in the form of previous manager, Arsene Wenger. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s semi-final, the Frenchman said he believed Arsenal had enough in the tank to overhaul the deficit staring them in the face.

“I want them to do well,” Wegner told beIN SPORTS. “It’s an opportunity to get to a final and come back to the Champions League.

“I believe there is no chance of that in the Premier League but it’s still possible.

“It will be a success if Arsenal win a trophy, that is always a success, but your real qualities are decided by where you stand in the championship.

“You have so many strikers and people who can score goals and be creative. 2-1 is the result at the moment but you should be quite confident to change and reverse it.”

Arsenal scored a pivotal away goal the last time these two clubs faced off. A late Nicolas Pepe penalty not only halved the deficit for Arsenal but also managed to keep them alive in the matchup going into the second round of the double-header.

With Arsenal languishing in the Premier League, winning the Europa League remains the only way for Arsenal to make it into European football next term. However, things will be far from straightforward with Unai Emery set to utilise his knowhow of Arsenal come today.
