Marc Overmars has spoken about Nicolas Tagliafico’s potential move to Arsenal.
Arsenal are planning to bring in fresh faces during the summer transfer window as they play to upgrade their roster. Since Unai Emery took charge of the club, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Bernd Leno, Denis Suarez, and Stephen Leichsteiner have joined the Gunners.
The Spaniard has already spoken about the necessity for transfers during the interviews. Should the London outfit clinch a Champions League place, Emery will be eager to buy big names as the club has already promised to allocate a good transfer sum. Various players have been linked with Arsenal and one among them is Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico.
The Argentine International has been in fine fettle with the Dutch outfit and was part of the side which dismantled Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League Round of 16. Besides Arsenal, he is also attracting interest from the reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid who are also planning to solve their left-back limbos.
But, former Arsenal forward and current Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars has reiterated that the club will do everything to keep hold of the 26-year-old and the left-back intends to renew his contract at Amsterdam.
“We also want to keep Nico Tagliafico and David Neres here,” Overmars told NOC when asked if any more players would join Andre Onana in signing new deals.
“If you start reading the news on sports sites every time, you will continue to give your question and answer. ‘In the end, we provide the answer ourselves, because of course we are working with Nico to keep him here for another year. Let’s see that in the coming weeks.” said Overmars.
There were several reports quoting that the Gunners made a bid worth 8 million pounds for the winter transfer window. On the other hand, Tagliafico’s agent Ricardo Schlieper said that the Los Blancos wants his client as a replacement for Marcelo. With Zinedine Zidane at the helm, the Brazilian is likely to stay put at Santiago Bernabeu.
“It’s said that Tagliafico’s name has been included on Real Madrid’s shortlist because Marcelo will join Juventus.
“However, no-one’s called me yet, even if there have been enquiries from other teams. He has two years left on his contract and he has no release clause, but Ajax have set a minimum price for the top European clubs.
“Which teams are they? All I can say is that among them, there’s a big Spanish club. That said, I think it’s the right time for Tagliafico to step up a level.” said Schlieper.
It will certainly be an interesting summer as Unai Emery is left with Sead Kolasinac in the left-back department, while Nacho Monreal has been used as a center-back mostly. There is no doubt that Ajax will try everything to keep. They have already sold Frenkie De Jong to Barcelona, whilst Hakim Ziyech and Matthijs De Ligt look likely to move away from the Johan Cryuff Arena.
Since Tagliafico has denied extending his contract with Ajax, a sum of 30 million euros will be enough to lure him away from the Netherlands.
