Canadian bodybuilder Chris Bumstead had no intention of pursuing bodybuilding as a career even after the formative years of his life. Had it not been for various events in his life, Bumstead might not have participated on this arduous journey of making a career out of this sport.
Born and brought up in Ottawa, Ontario, Bumstead, like most other children, was interested in various sports like soccer, baseball, basketball and ice hockey. It was for his participation in these sports that Bumstead started to get a hang of the gym which eventually blossomed into a successful career.
Bumstead, who had started to develop a muscular physique during his school days, had first tried his hand at a regional-level bodybuilding competition in Ontario itself. Perhaps inspired by his elder sister Melissa Valliere, it was quite a day for the siblings as both of them returned home with laurels.
Overall champions, Melissa and Chris had won in the senior and junior (Under-21) category respectively. The outcome of this competition in Ontario played a pivotal role in motivating Chris to convert a hobby into a line of work. Not only having already met Melissa’s boyfriend and professional bodybuilder Iain Valliere but also trained under him, Chris had started to take bodybuilding more seriously from this point in time.

It was as a 21-year old in 2017 that Bumstead made his debut in the all important Mr. Olympia. Two consecutive seasons of finishing as the runner-up had made a name for Bumstead in the coveted competition but the global recognition was still missing majorly due to the lack of a title. Having said that, the wait for a maiden title didn’t last very long as Bumstead managed to bag one in his third attempt in 2019.
