The Portuguese midfielder was linked with the Red Devils all summer and it seemed that it was just a matter of time before he traded the stripes of Sporting for the Red of Manchester. However, that didn’t happen as the management at Old Trafford felt that Fernandes was not good enough to sport their Jersey.

His performance came just days after Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace. This led to fans making comparisons with Jesse Lingard. Lingard plays in the same position for the Red Devils as Fernandes does for Sporting.

United’s playmaker failed to come out of the conversation unscathed as the fans tore in to the team for their failure to invest in a seasoned player who by all accounts, is still a young player with his best yet to come.

Surely Fernandes will be picked up by a European heavyweight in the future. However, Manchester United fans will hurt knowing they had the chance first.
