BCCI announced the squad to face New Zealand in the three T20s that will proceed the ODI series today. There were a couple of surprises as Shreyas Iyer and Mohammad Siraj were also included in a youthful looking squad.

Many people were surprised to see their selections, which is why the Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad gave reasons for their inclusion in the squad.

“Shreyas has been prolific in all forms of the game, be it Test, ODI, T20, IPL, name anything he is performing, so we will stick with this policy; if we pick a player we will give him an extended run and we will continue with him for some point and nurture him and see that he goes on to become successful. Siraj is also doing well and has been duly rewarded,” Prasad said.

Prasad clearly mentions that domestic performances will be taken into consideration for national team selection. This is encouraging news for everyone as it clearly means that all the hard work that players put in the domestic circuit will not go to waste.

The latest example is Dinesh Karthik’s inclusion in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. Karthik scored heavily in the domestic season and has been justifiably rewarded with a call up to the national team.

Prasad also mentioned that the rotation policy for players will include the skipper Virat Kohli as well. This was probably a response to the rumours that indicate that Kohli might be rested for the Sri Lanka series which will take place after New Zealand’s visit.
