Charles Barkley, Who was Michael Jordan’s Best Friend, Claims Clyde Drexler Resented the Bulls Legend in 1992
It wouldn’t be the first time, we have discussed Clyde Drexler being jealous and resentful of Michael Jordan. It has always been about being compared to the greats. Clyde himself was quite good but the lack of comparison infuriated him. Charles Barkley was the one to give us this insight.
It is not as shocking as you think. Charles has always been close to Michael and was good with the Bulls legend for various reasons. He was also able to find out what MJ was thinking.
Their friendship in the 90s was the talk of the town. It also meant that they knew an awful lot about each other, which has often trickled down into news and stories over the years. Including this instance, where Barkley quite literally, revealed that Clyde was jealous of Michael.
Charles Barkley, who was best friends with Michael Jordan reveals Clyde Drexler’s jealousy
During the fame and fortune of 1992’s redeem team, Michael Jordan was seen as the heir to the NBA mantle. Something which every NBA player coveted, including Clyde Drexler.
And in winning the Gold Medal with Team USA just weeks after beating Clyde and the Trail Blazers in the NBA Finals, Michael had cemented his place in history.
The media also tried to recreate a sort of “Magic-Bird” type rivalry between the two and it failed. This was what led to Clyde resenting MJ.
Charles Barkley knew of this and said the following:
“I think Clyde has always been jealous of Michael (Jordan), to be honest with you,’ He added, “I think he’s always wanted to be compared to Michael”.
Clyde still had an illustrious career
Clyde the Glide as he was called, had quite the career despite the resentment. A 10-time all-star, an NBA champion with the Houston Rockets in 1995, and a gold medal with Team USA in 1992, Clyde had it all.
The only problem was, he was never able to reach the levels that MJ did. He finished in MVP voting behind Jordan and eventually lost to the Bulls in 1992.
It was only after MJ retired that Drexler was able to finally win. And over time while one is ubiquitous when you talk about basketball, the other is just a cult hero. We can understand the resentment but we can’t honestly understand the jealousy.
