The first ODI of the imminent West Indies’ tour of Bangladesh will be played tomorrow at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka.
In what will be West Indies’ third tour since the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh will be playing international cricket for the first time after 10 months.
As far as the hosts are concerned, two major selling points for them lie in opening batsman Tamim Iqbal set to captain Bangladesh and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan returning to international cricket after 16 months. While Iqbal has previously led Bangladesh in a Test and three ODIs, it will be the first time tomorrow that he will be playing as a full-time captain.
West Indies, on the other hand, will take the field with a highly inexperienced squad as most of the A-list names had withdrawn from the tour citing COVID-19 concerns. 34-year old Jason Mohammed, the last of whose 28 ODIs had come in 2018, will be leading the visitors in the three-match ODI series.
The last time when Bangladesh and West Indies had played an ODI against each other was in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when Bangladesh registered a 7-wicket victory on the back of Hasan’s ninth ODI century. Bangladesh and West Indies’ last ODI bilateral series dates back to 2018 when Bangladesh had put on display a 2-1 series victory.
