"Can't be better prepared for WTC Final": Shubman Gill expresses confidence in team preparation ahead of England tour

Shubman Gill expresses confidence: The Indian opening batsman believes that the team is well-prepared for the upcoming tour of England.

Currently undergoing a mandatory quarantine period in a team hotel in Mumbai, India batsman Shubman Gill has labelled the procedure as “very tough”. However, the 21-year old player mentioned that the players are keeping themselves busy in some way or the other.

“Quarantine period is very tough because for 14 days you are only in one room, with not much to do. But we still do workouts in our rooms and keep ourselves busy in some way or the other. We watch movies on I-Pad. Otherwise, we play games, do workouts and try and keep ourselves as busy as possible,” Gill was quoted as saying by India Today.

Having scored 132 runs in seven innings at an average and strike rate of 18.85 and 117.85 respectively in Indian Premier League 2021, Gill struggled for runs but remains high on confidence after facing the likes of Pat Cummins and Lockie Ferguson in the nets at Kolkata Knight Riders.

“It helps a lot when you play good bowlers in nets and play them for a long period of time. Your confidence is very high. Like in our KKR team, we had good bowlers like [Lockie] Ferguson and [Pat] Cummins. Definitely, you get high on confidence. When you go out and play a match, you know what they’ll bowl. Those things matter,” Gill said.

Gill, who made his Test debut during the tour of Australia last year, had made the most of six innings by scoring 259 runs at an average of 51.80. Been part of India’s series-winning squads against Australia and England, Gill believes that the team is prepared aptly ahead of the historic final against New Zealand next month.

“Our performance in Australia was very good. Over the last few years, we have been doing very well on away tours, so our confidence is very high. I think we can’t be better prepared for the World Test Championship final than this,” Gill added.

Set to travel to England for his maiden international tour, Gill would want to learn from his past experiences of playing in English conditions for India A. As an opening batsman, Gill will have to do much better than his last three Tests where he had returned with scores of 0, 14, 11, 15* and 0.

“As an opener, not just in England but everywhere, you need to know how to play out sessions. Playing sessions is very important. It has been seen in England that whenever it is cloudy, the ball swings a lot. When there is sun, the pitch becomes good for batting. It is necessary to assess conditions as opener,” Gill further added.
