Howard Stand Headingley: Why Is This Part Of Leeds Cricket Ground Famous?

The Headingley Stadium is famous for creating one of the most hostile atmospheres in the country. Not just cricket, but the fans of Leeds United Football Club also have a reputation for creating a tough environment for the visiting teams. There are different stands at Headingley and each one has its very own significance.

Western Terrace stand at the ground is always very vocal and the English team loves playing here as they know that the spectators will act as an unofficial 12th man for them. There is another stand called the Howard Stand and it is named after a stadium announcer of the venue.

The ongoing Ashes has already been heated up after two close matches and a plethora of verbal wars between former and current players of both the sides. Even though the spectators at the Lord’s are known for maintaining a dignified atmosphere, situation was completely the opposite on the final day of the second Ashes 2023 Test.

Howard Stand Headingley

Headingley’s Howard stand is named after a stadium announcer with the name of Howard Ferguson, who has been doing the duties for so many years now. He has been with the club for a very long time now and has been through a lot of different works before becoming the voice of the venue.

Ferguson was a student at Leeds University and became part of the Yorkshire Cricket Club gradually. He worked at the bar for the club before taking up a job in the field of venue operations. Subsequently, the job of a match announcer came across. Readers must note that Ferguson also used to play the game and represented Horpe Arch & Boston Spa Cricket Club.

Ferguson was famous for his one-liners as well. He once called former batter Gary Ballance the “Ferrari from Harare”. Ballance was born and bought up in Zimbabwe before playing international cricket for England. Ferguson was so famous and respected that the club decided to name a stand after him.
