Steve Smith injury update: Why has Smith missed Australia's practice session in Adelaide?

Steve Smith injury update: The Australian batsman was seen leaving the Adelaide Oval after a suspected injury to his back.

Having arrived at the Adelaide Oval to train ahead of the first Test of the ongoing India’s tour of Australia, Australia batsman Steve Smith was seen returning back to the dressing room to surprise one and all.

With the hosts already struggling due to respective injuries to multiple players, someone of Smith’s stature adding to the list of injured players will become a significant blow to Australia a couple of days before a pink-ball Test match.

Smith, who initially entered the field for warm-ups and some fielding, returned back to the dressing room alongside the Australian physio after only 10 minutes.

Known for putting in the hard yards especially with his batting before a match, Smith not taking further part was beginning to be a concern for the Australian media and fans.

While Cricket Australia haven’t issued any official statement on their star batsman, there have been reports of Smith missing the session due to a sore back. According to a spokesperson of the Australian team, Smith tweaked his back while bending down to pick up a ball during the fielding session.

Smith, 31, is said to be “fit” and will take part in the practice session on the eve of the match tomorrow which has come as a huge relief for the hosts.

In 10 Test matches against India, Smith has amassed 1,429 runs at an average of 84.05 including seven centuries and three half-centuries. In the four Tests that he’s played against India in Australia, Smith’s 769 runs have come at an average of 128.16 and comprises of four centuries and two half-centuries.
