Why England and Australia Wearing Red Caps on Day 2 of Lord’s Ashes Test?
Ahead of the Day 2 of the Lord’s Test between England and Australia, both sets of players entered the field with red caps. The step was taken for a very special cause. Apart from the players, the spectators on the ground were also encouraged to wear red colour for this particular match.
The second day of the match is dedicated to the Ruth Strauss Foundation. Ruth Strauss was the wife of former England captain Andrew Strauss who died due to cancer which happens to non-smokers in 2018. This foundation was set by Andrew in memory of his wife only.
Lord’s Test has been dominated by the Australian team so far and they are slowly tightening their grip on the match. The batting has not been easy at this ground because of the bad overhead conditions. Talking about the foundation, England and India match in 2021 raised funds of £1,204,447, which is a record.
Why England and Australia Wearing Red Caps on Day 2 of Lord’s Ashes Test?
England and Australian players wore red caps to support the Ruth Strauss Foundation only. This day is called ‘Red for Ruth’ where the commentators were also seen wearing red coats. Strauss along with his children rang the ball ahead of the day’s play and he was all dressed in red as well.
“The idea of setting up the foundation came up with Ruth in the last few months of her life. Ruth desperately wanted to help those affected by this terrible disease and she had a very strong sense of charity – in the broadest sense – of helping others less fortunate than ourselves,” Andrew Strauss had said about the foundation.
A special day.

The foundation aims to support the children who lost their parents because of lung cancer. According to reports in the UK, more than 23,600 parents with dependent children die every year. The foundation aims to raise awareness and provide emotional support as well to the affected families.
There is a lot of research going on in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers. A lot of fundraisers are organized in the country for the same by Strauss. The donations can be made via their website as well.
