Cristiano Ronaldo posts a cryptic Instagram post after Lionel Messi clinches FIFA Best Player in the awards show last night.

Lionel Messi pipped Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk somewhat surprisingly to win the FIFA Best Player award. All the media attention and hype surrounding Van Dijk made it seem that the Dutch captain had this in the bag.

However, once the initial surprise wore off, it became easier to see why the Argentine was presented with the award. 51 goals last season for club and country is no joke.

He led Barcelona to their 2nd consecutive La Liga and took the Bluagrana to the finals of the Copa del Rey and the semi-finals of Champions league. Argentina also bagged the third place in the Copa America.

One could make the argument that Van Dijk won the Champions League with Liverpool and were finalists in the Nations league with Netherlands.

However, Messi achieved his feats while carrying a crumbling Barcelona. Van Dijk on the other hand was the heart of the defence of a well-oiled machine, who were made better with Van Dijk but only marginally so.

The argument over who should have won off the 2 will probably continue till the dawn of time. However, there was one other man in the race who has largely been left off of such discussions and it looks like he probably hasn’t taken this very well.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been given rest to heal his muscle fatigue, chose not to attend the evening. Instead he decided to stay home and posted a rather odd Instagram post almost immediately after Lionel Messi’s win was announced.

Ronaldo’s caption read:

“Everything that is big today has started small. You can’t do everything, but do everything you can to make your dreams come true.

“And keep in mind that after night always comes dawn.”

Ronaldo seems rather hurt with the result. Perhaps it is the idea of seeing Messi take a lead over him when it comes to personal awards. He did declare his intention to win more individual awards than Messi in a recent interview with Piers Morgan.

It is likely now that Messi will also bag the Ballon d’Or at the end of this year. However, it is still not too late for Ronaldo to pull one over his eternal rival. Ronaldo may be 34 but he is one of the fittest players in the world.

He can very well turn back time and challenge for the award in the coming years before he finally decides to call it a day. Either that or we may witness more and more of these cryptic posts.
