Portugal took on Serbia in the Euro 2020 qualifier match last night. The defending champions played visitors as they searched for a victory after drawing their opening games with Ukraine and Serbia.

The home fans however, were determined to put the Portuguese talisman off his game as they chanted “Messi, Messi!” every time he touched the ball.

It is amazing to think that in 2019, after years of watching Ronaldo in action, people still think that chanting Messi’s name will rile him enough and cause him to underperform. If anything, Ronaldo has proven that the opposite is quite true in fact.

Ronaldo remained unfazed by the chants. In fact, it almost seemed to motivate him as Cristiano Ronaldo put his name on the scorer’s list. He roared in celebration with his trademark Siiiuuu jump, bringing the stadium to silence.

The Serbian fans had learned the hard way, that their attempts had miserably backfired as they witnessed Portugal walk away with a 4-2 win.

Earlier in the night, Carvalho stole a sneaky goal just before half-time to break the deadlock. Guedes then pulled of a stunner in the 58th minute of the match to double Portugal’s lead. Milenkovic pulled the game back for Serbia before Ronaldo added another for Portugal.

Mitrovic made the game a bit more interesting by scoring in the 85th minute. However, Bernardo Silva closed the game on them with a fine goal, just a minute later.

With this win, Portugal are now second in Group B. Ukraine lead the group and have an advantage of 8 points over Portugal. However, they have played two more games than them.
