David De Gea contract: Why has Man Utd’s goal keeper not yet renewed his contract?

David De Gea contract: Why has Man Utd’s goal keeper not yet renewed his contract despite being in his final year at the Old Trafford.

Manchester United have had a largely positive start to their campaign so far. They won all their pre-season matches and followed it up with a 4-0 demolition of Chelsea. They could have made it 2 out od 2 wins. However, Paul Pogba unfortunately missed a penalty in their game against Wolverhampton. The Red Devils therefore, had to return with a solitary point to show for.

Manchester United have solved most of their problems that carried over from their last season. Many players have left and a few have joined the ranks. The 3 players signed this summer have all been an improvement from the club boasted last summer. However, there is still one complication left on their hands that they are yet to sort.

De Gea reluctant over contract clause

Manchester United are keen to hold on to their no.1 keeper David De Gea. They have already triggered their one-year option on De Gea’s deal  in hopes that they can convince him to stay at Old Trafford. In principle, a deal has been agreed between both parties which will see the Spanish shot stopper pocket £350,000-a-week.

The keeper though is yet to put pen to paper. It seems that United’s new contract policy has made De Gea reluctant to sign a new contract. The Sun have reported that United are looking to insert a clause in any new contracts offers which would reduce a player’s wage by 25% if they miss out on the Champions League.

It is not just David De Gea but other players in the side too who have an issue with the new contract. De Gea will reportedly wait till January before a new deal is finalised while PSG are closely monitoring the situation. Long-time admirers, Real Madrid are also keeping a close look and may offer a pre-contract if he gets to January with just six months left on his current deal. However, having Navas and Courtois on their pay-roll makes it unlikely that they would look to add a third keeper.
