Mercedes has made a decent comeback from last year’s slump, and they see themselves doing well in P2 in the Constructors’ championship. However, with the recent resurgence of rivals such as Ferrari, that position could be in jeopardy as George Russell looks concerned. Admitting the issue, as per Racingnews365, the Mercedes driver vowed to protect their place together with Lewis Hamilton.
Admittedly, Ferrari had a mighty resurgence at the recently concluded Italian Grand Prix, where they claimed a pole position and took a podium with a 27-point haul. In the constructors’ standings, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc’s efforts helped Ferrari overtake Aston Martin to reach P3 and close the gap to the Silver Arrows.
Therefore, it is high time the Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Russell do their bits to save the Silver Arrows against Charles Leclerc and co. if they don’t want to have back-to-back P3 finish in the Constructors’ championship.
Russell is protective of the P2 place for Mercedes
As Ferrari made brilliant progress off late, Russell outlined his goal for the rest of the season. He does not want his team to slip up with eight races remaining this season.
Talking about this, the 25-year-old said, “We’re in a pretty comfortable position in P2, but we can’t let that slip. The way that I help the team achieve this is if I’m just putting in the consistent and solid results.”
Even though the Silver Arrows have P2 under them in the championship, they are still to win a race this season. Furthermore, they have fewer podiums than Aston Martin, who are in P4.
Mercedes’ looks to break Red Bull dominance amid moderate show
As George Russell talked about protecting their championship position this year from Ferrari and Aston Martin, he is also ready to aim for a win even if he has the slightest chance.
Russell added, “If there’s a chance to win, I’ll give it everything to achieve that,” Russell was the only one who ended Red Bull’s nine-race win streak.
Therefore, the Silver Arrows fans would be hopeful of a repetition from last year from either Gorge Russell or his veteran teammate Lewis Hamilton. Only time will tell if they can break Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s mighty dominance.
