“He was my idol and was wearing No 11″ – Sergio Perez reveals inspiration behind his F1 racing number
“He was my idol and was wearing No 11″ – Sergio Perez reveals the footballers and football teams he supports and admires in a special Red Bull feature.
In the ‘11 things you didn’t know about Checo’ feature on Red Bull’s website, Sergio Perez talks about the sports he loves (apart from F1) and career options for him if racing did not come calling.
The Mexican also shares an anecdote about the day he left his wallet at the residence of Red Bull F1 team principal Christian Horner. The subheading titled ‘He left his wallet in Christian’s office’, let’s read the story in his own words:
“I had a meeting with Christian and pretty much straight after I flew back to Mexico. A few days later, Christian phoned to let me know I had left my wallet behind and I still hadn’t realized.
“But it was good because I wasn’t going to see him for a while, so I wasn’t going to spend any money, so that worked pretty well!
“When going away to a race, all I take is my passport and my phone. I used to have a trainer who used to say ‘wallet, phone, passport and f*** the rest!’ As long as I have that, I’m fine.”

Sergio Perez and his love for football
Perez is a die-hard fan of former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star Ivan Zamorano. So die-hard that his racing number 11 was influenced by the footballer’s jersey number from his days scoring goals for Club America. He also revealed former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is a good friend of his.
“When I started in karting there was a football player that was playing for Club America, a team I like, it was Ivan Zamorano. He was my idol and was wearing No 11, so it was very easy for me to choose that.”
