“It’s going to be very tight with Mercedes” – Sergio Perez eager to take Red Bull to the top in Imola
“It’s going to be very tight with Mercedes” – Sergio Perez had a brilliant race in Bahrain, and now wants to take a step further and catapult Red Bull to the top of the podium in Imola.
Sergio Perez underlined his status as one of the best drivers on the grid with a mammoth performance in Bahrain. The Mexican started from the pit lane to finish P5, earning him the Driver of the Day title. But he wants much more than that, with his eyes on the podium in this weekend’s Imola extravaganza.
“I don’t have a fixed target, I just want to get this process done as quickly as possible. The team needs me up there and I need to be up there, so it’s not like I’m here relaxing that it will all come.
“I’m working hard, the engineers are working hard together with me and it will eventually click. And by the time that happens, we’re going to be very strong.”

Red Bull looking to topple Mercedes in Imola
After a drab last season in terms of the fight at the top, we have a real belter in our hands this season, with Red Bull taking the fight to the reigning Mercedes. Max Verstappen almost won it in Sakhir, and going by Perez’s debut, Red Bull start as the favorites this weekend – something we haven’t said for so long.
“I think it’s going to be very tight with Mercedes and we’re going to see if the fight is circuit related. It will be interesting to see how we are in Imola, on a very different track to Bahrain, and see how we compare against them.
“My goal is to have a good race and I’m looking forward to the weekend. Hopefully, in Imola, we can come back and be in contention to fight for a podium and hopefully the win. Unlike Bahrain, qualifying is very important at Imola as you can hardly overtake there but I like it.”
