Lando Norris Plays Lewis Hamilton in Upcoming Battle With Oscar Piastri

Youngsters Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have quickly become one of the strongest driver pairings in the current grid. With both drivers registering impressive performances race after race, many consider Norris and Piastri as future champions of F1. The expectation, however, comes with its pros and cons, as Norris claims to be in a Lewis Hamilton-like situation via RacingNews 365.

Despite Norris outperforming Piastri at every turn, the Briton feels the pressure being put on him by his Australian teammate. Earlier this month, Norris even (jokingly) admitted to not liking the pressure Piastri puts on him and wanted him to back off. A similar intra-team situation is unfolding at Mercedes, where Russell not only takes the challenge to Hamilton but also outperforms him on some days.

Lando Norris finds himself in a Hamilton-like situation at McLaren

McLaren has only been on the up since the start of the 2023 season. Despite being the slowest team on the grid in the first few races, timely and perfect upgrades meant they are now the second-fastest team. Another important factor in their incredible rise has been their driver duo.

Speaking to RacingNews 365, Norris admitted to being pushed by Piastri to the extent that he now relates to what Hamilton might be feeling at Mercedes.

“I’ve said previously, I’m not afraid to say it, he’s pushed me more than the last couple of years.”

“I’m sure now Lewis is learning a lot from George. George is doing a very good job.”

Addressing the added pressure on his shoulders, Norris has shown great maturity to deal with it. He enjoys the challenge as it makes him work harder. Norris spends more time learning the driving styles of his partner, which also helps him do a better job when out on the track. The Briton also feels that the tussle between him and Piastri is good for the team as, in the end, they both want to win points for the team.

Norris takes credit for Piastri’s rookie season

There is little doubt that Piastri has been the rookie driver of the season. By winning his first podium of the season in Japan, not only did he win McLaren’s first double podium in two years, but he also became the first driver to secure a podium win in their rookie season since 2017. With such a special season under his belt, many would credit Piastri’s skills and hard work. However, Norris believes he deserves some of the credit, too.

During an interview with Total-Motorsport.com in September, Norris claimed he played a “huge role” in the development of Oscar Piastri. Norris added Piastri started his F1 career off one of the best baselines a rookie could ask for. Since his first race in F1, where Piastri did not even see the Chequered Flag, he has come a long way as he registered his first podium in Japan.
