Lewis Hamilton Once Bought a Whole Table at Met Gala to Offer Spotlight to Young Black Designers

The Met Gala is one of the biggest fashion events, and the most recognizable celebrities from all over the world are in attendance every single year. Knowing Lewis Hamilton and his love for fashion, whenever the seven-time world champion traveled to the gala, he was sure to turn some heads.

In 2021, however, Hamilton wanted people to turn their heads, not for him, but for his entourage that evening. Hamilton, who has always spoken about more inclusion and diversity, both inside and outside F1, bought a whole table at the gala. This wasn’t for himself or his friends and family but for some of the most talented black designers he knew.

Hamilton wanted them to be under the spotlight because he felt that diversity was an important factor missing within the fashion industry. He combined his love for fashion and fight for equal rights into one, and stole the show with this huge gesture in the presence of some of the biggest names in the world.

Lewis Hamilton fighting for diversity in F1 and fashion

Hamilton is a huge fan of fashion and in previous interviews, he has stated just how much it helps him take his mind off the pressure in F1. Hence, when he realized that young people from various backgrounds are often neglected in this industry, it deeply upset him.

In 2021, Hamilton started the ‘Hamilton Commission’ which was an initiative taken to include more diversity within F1. Soon, he also wanted to make a mark away from the track, so followed the launch of his commission with his grand gesture at the Met Gala.

“We’re living in a time where diversity and inclusion are so important,” Hamilton said as quoted by Vogue. “And that’s why I started this organization within my own sport. I realized it’s very similar in the fashion industry. A lot of young brands and designers don’t have the same opportunities, so that’s what really set me off.”

Hamilton speaking out against racism within Formula 1

Over the years, Hamilton has gone on to become one of the most outspoken drivers in F1. He has been critical about many issues plaguing the sport and society, but his stance against racism took a huge leap in 2020, with the BLM movement.

Hamilton wore t-shirts demanding justice against victims of racial violence and discrimination, even though it led to backlash from the FIA. Earlier this year, when the governing body of F1 announced that drivers won’t be able to speak on matters outside the sport without prior permission, Hamilton responded by defying them without remorse.

Hamilton was adamant that he isn’t worried about the consequences and will continue to fight against discrimination within the sport.
