The 2025 NBA trade deadline has proved to be one of the craziest in recent times. From Luka Doncic’s shocking Lakers appointment to Jimmy Butler’s move to the Warriors, the last few days have captivated all basketball fans around the world, including McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Piastri has kept an eye on recent developments, and ahead of the trade deadline on February 6th, he is more pumped than ever. And it is quite natural given what has transpired in Dallas.
There had been hints about a possible trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers as both teams’ general managers had a meeting a month ago on January 7th in Hotel Crescent Court. However, no one would have expected it was for a trade of this magnitude.
Truly, these have been a wild few days in the world of basketball. No one, not even the biggest experts in the sport would have guessed that Doncic, a superstar and the face of Dallas Mavericks would get traded to the Lakers out of the blue. Piastri, upon learning what had happened, was shocked as well.
The Aussie driver, who is currently gearing up for his third season in F1, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts. “This NBA trade deadline is lively,” Piastri wrote.

But his excitement levels were so high that he also posted an Instagram story with pictures of the newly traded players. This time, he swapped the word ‘lively’ with ‘wild’.
“NBA trade deadline is wild,” he said.
Piastri shared a photo of him, looking shocked literally. It was a candid picture of himself in McLaren colors with his hair all messy.

It was a reply to ESPN’s Tweet, which truly broke the internet and has since brought millions of eyes to the NBA’s annual ‘day of shocks’.
Busy and mind-boggling NBA trades on deadline day
Apart from Doncic, Jimmy Butler’s switch away from the Miami Heat is even more complex with multiple teams being involved in the trade apart from his new destination — the Golden State Warriors. While the Warriors swapped Butler with Anthony Wiggins heading to the Heat, they also traded multiple players of theirs to other teams.
There has been an exodus of players from the Warriors’ roster with players like Wiggins and Kyle Anderson heading to Miami. Meanwhile, teams like Utah Buzz and Detroit Pistons have also cashed in on the trade chaos.
Naturally, athletes from the F1 world and other sports, who keenly follow the NBA, would be astonished by seeing all these trades unfold.
Piastri was the only F1 driver to openly react to these trades. Others surely got to know what happened — very few in sports didn’t — but they didn’t take to a public platform. The 23-year-old could post some more reactions soon, as there are still a few hours left until the deadline approaches on February 6th.
