“Nothing will be announced in Silverstone”– George Russell busts the fake news of his announcement to Mercedes at Silverstone.
George Russell is highly susceptible to joining Mercedes in 2022, and its announcement can be anytime soon. Still, recently there were rumours of the Briton being announced in Silverstone as the new Mercedes driver replacing Valtteri Bottas.
However, Russell has denied the possibility of it and claimed that nothing would be announced in Silverstone while he is going to represent Williams in the upcoming British Grand Prix.
“I signed with Mercedes five or six years ago now, that is 100 percent true,” Russell jokingly told the F1 Nation podcast about his long-term role as a Mercedes junior driver when asked if he had signed with the Silver Arrows.
“As everybody knows, they look after me. But, with regards to my drive for next year, nothing has been signed or sealed and nothing will be announced in Silverstone, so I can let you know that.”
Williams is progressing rapidly.
Russell has experienced the worst of Williams, but he claims that there is some real growth in the former world champions, and next year would be much exciting.
“The change of structure and everything that’s going on at Williams is fascinating,” Russell explained. “Obviously, the team have finished last for the past three years in a row. I’m pretty confident that will not be the case next year.
“Things are really making a turn for the better. Things are really getting in line and in place. Jost [Capito, team principal] is doing a fantastic job building that structure for everybody to be more efficient, more streamlined,” he added.
“And every single decision that’s been made so far I think has been a good one for the right reasons. I see no reason why, over the course of the next number of years, Williams can’t fight their way back to the front.”
