“They both deserve to be in Formula 1" - Toto Wolff drops names of two drivers to potentially replace George Russell at Williams

“They both deserve to be in Formula 1″ – Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has confirmed they will not come in the way of any of their drivers getting a chance to drive for a different team in F1.

With George Russell set to join Mercedes, the speculation regarding his replacement at Williams is gaining steam. The team’s boss Jost Capito has suggested they have a shortlist ready, which should include Mercedes’ Formula E pairing Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne.

And if either of the two is offered the Williams seat, Mercedes will not come in the way. This has been confirmed by Toto Wolff, who is very pleased with their performances in Formula E.

“I’m really happy having them as our drivers in Formula E, I couldn’t wish for anybody else. But I would never be in the way of any driver if they were to have the possibility of driving in Formula 1.

“Both drivers have the talent and the work ethic and the intelligence to be in Formula 1. Both of them won the most important junior series [FIA Formula 2].

“Stoffel was thrown in a situation with McLaren that was difficult to handle back in the day. They both deserve to be in Formula 1 and I would very much hope they can find their way back.”

Nyck de Vries happy with Mercedes

Nyck de Vries has reacted to his name being considered, terming it a “surprise”. He is happy being a Mercedes driver and doesn’t seem too keen to throw in his hat in the Williams ring. He will have to ‘compete’ against stronger prospects Valtteri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg if he does.

“I read that rumour too and it was probably as much as a surprise to you as for me.

“I’m very happy with Mercedes and Formula E, and this is where I want to be succeeding. Whatever happens in the longer or mid-term future, I don’t know.”
