Is the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on Steam worth it?

The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition had a lot of hype behind it when it launched in latte 2021. What was promised, was a remastered, and definitive way to experience the classic 3D era GTA games. However, what launched was a buggy, broken remaster, that was arguably worse than its two-decade-old predecessors. Since then, the game has received a few updates and is now out on Steam. Are the updates enough to warrant a purchase or is worth forgoing until it’s even cheaper?

GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is currently 50% off on Steam

The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition gives players access to three 3D-era games from Rockstar’s franchise:

  • Grand Theft Auto 3 Definitive Edition
  • Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Definitive Edition
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City Definitive Edition

Unfortunately, none of these games have been rebuilt from the ground up. Unlike a complete remake like Yakuza Kiwami or The Last of Us Part 1, almost everything barring texture and lighting is identical to the original games. While this in itself isn’t terrible, the fact that the “Definitive Editions” are more broken than the originals is a worrying sign.

Despite a few updates, all three games are riddled with glitches and bugs that arguably make it the inferior experience. Those looking to experience these games for the first time may find them acceptable, but loyal fans looking to experience them the best way possible may be disappointed. What makes it worse for long-time fans is that most old mods don’t work here. Therefore, sticking to the original copies may be a better choice for them.

While the Epic Games Store version isn’t out yet, fixes aren’t expected. Since November 2022, no updates have come through and fans aren’t exactly hopeful. The Trilogy has received mixed reviews on Steam, mainly criticizing its incomplete state. For first-time players, the Definitive Edition Trilogy isn’t abysmal, but enthusiasts will most likely want to stay away.
