Unusual toss from Shreyas Iyer leaves Dhoni laughing

In the fixture between DD and CSK, Shreyas Iyer flipped the coin so far away from the pitch at the toss that it left MS Dhoni laughing.

Be it AB de Villiers’s Superman-esque catch or Rishabh Pant’s daddy innings, the IPL is never short of throwing never-seen-before spectacles. Another such unusual incident was witnessed at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi in the match between DD and CSK when the two Captains stepped in the middle for the toss.

It was DD’s home game, so Shreyas Iyer had to flip the coin and the visiting skipper Dhoni had to call. However, the way Iyer flipped the coin, he sent it a fair distance away from the pitch as MS Dhoni and broadcaster Simon Doull looked on.

Dhoni could not stop laughing as he chose to bowl first. Here is the full video:

Further explaining his decision to bowl first, Dhoni further said, “There are chances of the wicket deteriorating. That’s a chance we have to take. It’s important to learn from each game. Every game gives you an opportunity to improve. We don’t want to miss the key players when it comes to the knockouts. Lungi comes in for David Willey”.

Before the match, Iyer let out fanboy post for his Dhoni on Instagram, mentioning how much it meant for him to play alongside his childhood idol.

“I was just 10 years old when Mahi bhai made his debut for Team India. Have always looked up to him as a leader and as a player. Standing besides him for the toss the other night in Pune was unreal. Tonight is another such night. Wish us the best and come support us at Kotla.” the post was worded.

As it turned out, Iyer had some luck with the toss as after a blitz from keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, all-rounders Vijay Shankar and Harshal Patel took DD to a 160 odd score. This was a decent total on a Delhi pitch which was slow and the ball was stopping before coming to the bat.

The total proved good enough to trigger a batting collapse for CSK. Only Ambati Rayudu could weather the storm of the DD bowlers – mainly Amit Mishra and Trent Boult. As it turned out, Chennai fell short by 35 runs as DD salvaged some pride.
