English test captain, Joe Root has had a tough few weeks, as his England side meekly succumbed the Ashes, after a 4-0 loss to Australia. It was a huge tour for Root himself, as this was his opportunity to dominate the old enemy and establish his credentials as one of the best batsmen of this generation.

But in spite of making starts through out the series, Root could not convert anyone into a three figure mark, as the English captain visibly wilted in the Australia summer.

There was some positive news for Joe Root though, as his name was released among the 1122 players who will go into IPL auction pool later this month.

This is the first time Root will be taking part in the IPL, and has already spoken about his excitement for playing in India.

“One thing I’ve been very aware of for the past two years is the lack of T20 cricket. When that World Cup does come around in a couple of years’ time, this is probably the best window of opportunity for me to develop that white-ball side of my game.

As someone involved in the Test side I don’t want to be missing white ball cricket and falling behind, trying to catch up.”

“I think the IPL is a great opportunity. It may be that I don’t have a great IPL but the best thing would be the exposure to different players and different ways of looking at the game, being under pressure for long periods of time.

I can’t see how that could hamper my game or be detrimental to my England career. I spent a good four or five months making that decision, that’s where my head is at. Hopefully we’ll see the benefits in a couple of years’ time.”

Root was a star performer in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016, as his batting displays were a big part of England’s journey to the final. Although England eventually lost to West Indies in the final, Root won everyone’s hearts throughout the tournament.

The Englishman is a target for several franchises in the auction, as the likes of Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royal want the services of the classy Englishman.

With a base price of Rs 2 crores, Root is expected to fetch a large sum, and will definitely be one to look out for in the auction!
