Kerr weighs in on the GOAT debate, having played with Jordan and coached against LeBron

Steve Kerr has had the privilege of professionally coming together with arguably two of the best players that the game has ever seen.

While Kerr played with Jordan during his time at the Bulls, Kerr has been coaching the Golden State Warriors in their best phase, a time when they have frequently come up agains the Cavaliers(led by LeBron) in the NBA finals.

Kerr witnessed the LeBron led comeback in the 2016 finals, one where GSW blew a 3-1 lead and lost two games at home to almost gift the title to LeBron and the Cavs.

Now, that title made LeBron feel like the greatest player in the world, as the Cavs had beaten one of the greatest teams of all time and that too when all odds were stacked against them.

A 3-1 deficit, two games away from home and the chemistry that the Warriors team possessed, not many would have given the Cavs a chance, but they managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat, and that comeback has caused quite a stir with respect to the GOAT debate.

On his 34th birthday, an interview with LeBron was released, one where he said that after that 2016 finals win he felt like he had become the greatest player of all time.

Now, since that statement from LeBron, he has received a lot of flak from the NBA fraternity, largely because Michael Jordan never ever claimed to be the greatest.

A video of Michael saying the same too emerged last night on social media, one where he said in 2009 that he could never call himself the GOAT, because that would be disrespectful to the legends that played the game before him.

He hadn’t played agains them and would never have the chance to play agains the legends that after him and thus he and the NBA world could never really know who the greatest player of all time is.

Steve Kerr too has weighed in on the debate saying that he couldn’t chose between the two, but over the course of the last few NBA finals, has spoken very, very highly of LeBron James.

“They’re the two best players that I’ve ever witnessed. They’re very different, but however you want to rank them, they’re there together” Kerr said.

Kerr then went onto speak about how LeBron had evolved over the last few years, making that leap from the best 5 players in the world to tag of being the ‘best player in the world’.

“I think maybe the greatest testament to LeBron is that five years ago he was one of the top-five players of all time,” Kerr said.

“From five years ago until now, it seems like he’s 10 times better, because he’s added so much skill to his game.”

Kerr emphasised on the fact that LeBron had added that shooting threat to his game as well, one that was earlier missing from his repertoire.

“Well, he’s terrifying,” Kerr said.

“He really is. Every time he comes down the court, getting downhill, you just know he’s either going to get to the rim or he’s going to find one of his shooters for a 3-point shot. He’s added the 3-point threat.

“When we came here three years ago in the first meeting, we weren’t fearful of his shot. We were fearful of his power and his penetration and his passing, but now you fear everything.” he concluded.

Do you think Kerr is suggesting that LeBron has become better than Jordan?
