Liverpool transfer news: Antoine Griezmann to snub Barcelona for Liverpool despite the strong links with the Catalan club.
Antoine Griezmann announced his departure from Atletico Madrid after the end of the season in a clip, while addressing the Los Rojniblancos’ fans.
The French superstar last night came on to the social media to explain his decision.
“After speaking with (coach Diego Simeone), (CEO Miguel) Angel Gil Marin and with people in the club’s hierarchy, I wanted to speak with you, the fans.
“You have always shown me a lot of love and I wanted to be the first to tell you that I’ve taken the decision to leave to see other things and take on other challenges.” said Griezmann.
It is reported that Griezmann will most likely move to the domestic rivals Barcelona. Although, the Catalan club almost came signed him last year but the 28-year-old star decided to remain in Madrid and declared it through an hour long documentary.
One year later, Barcelona are closest to hire the French International by triggering his £104 million release clause. However, it is also reported that Liverpool can compete with Blaugranas for Griezmann.
Additionally, ESPN pundit Craig Burley thinks Griezmann would be a huge hit at Liverpool.
“I actually think that Liverpool would be a great place for Griezmann to go this summer,” Burley told ESPN FC. Liverpool are very much a team on the up at the moment and he could aid Roberto Firmino who also likes to drop deep.”
“You talk about how good Griezmann would be linking up with Messi and Barcelona, what about with Liverpool’s front three? You look at that and we talk about Liverpool needing that strength in depth, he would add that and Firmino or Salah some games might sit out.” he further said.
Presently, Barcelona are the favourites to land the World Cup winning superstar. Moreover, his ability to play in various positions in attacks will make him an effective purchase.
However, considering Griezmann’s prowess, many European giants might battle out for him, hence, a transfer to Barcelona can be snubbed by him again if he gets lured by other attractive prospects.
