Liverpool have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit of Lyon’s Skipper Nabil Fekir.

Liverpool nearly signed Olympique Lyon Skipper Nabil Fekir last summer, but the transfer did not go through for some other reasons. The local outlet Liverpool Echo reported that the club decided to back out of the deal because of his negative medical report on his knee.

Even though it is still unclear if the club would make a move for the World Cup winner this summer, but the prospect of landing him for a cut-price deal would be tempting for the Reds. Since his contract runs down in 2020, the club has stated that the attacking midfielder would be available for grabs this summer, according to the French outlet L’Equipe.

The report also added on that the Skipper has a gentleman agreement with the president Aulas to leave the club after the conclusion of this season. Liverpool agreed 53 million pounds fee and the Frenchman was ready to sign a five-year deal with the club, but the deal failed because of Lyon’s resistance to hold him up and frustrate the Reds says the reports.

The attacking midfielder, who was part of France world cup winning campaign, has made 30 appearances this term, scoring 12 goals in the process. With his contract running down in a year, an offer around 35 million will be enough to secure his signature.

Along with Liverpool, Chelsea and Bayern Munich were the other two clubs keen on the 25-year-old last summer. But, the Reds have the upper hand currently because Chelsea have been hit with a transfer ban, whereas, the Bavarians are unlikely to spend more after concluding the signings of Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard for a combined fee of 115 million euros.

Fekir was asked about his future at Lyon, but he says that he is uncertain about his next club. He specifically mentioned about Liverpool’s interest which indicates that the deal is not over yet.

Fekir told Telefoot: “Liverpool? It’s part of a player’s career, but it makes you stronger and you have to move forward.

“I really don’t know what I will do (next summer) but as I said I feel good in Lyon, the president trusts me, that’s good. You will see (if I extend my contract).”

His agent Jean-Pierre Bernes refused to dismiss the Liverpool talks last summer by claiming that his client could make a move in the future.

“Well he didn’t sign because well… it is not over! This is not the end of the story.” Bernes said.

Along with Nabil Fekir, midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is another player likely to leave Lyon this summer.
