Luka Modric was central to Croatia’s run to the final of the World Cup, which was also country’s first ever in the tournament.

Luka Modric had one of the most memorable and demanding seasons of his career. The midfielder featured in 59 matches for club and country combined. For Real Madrid, he racked up 43 appearances, while he played 16 times for Croatia- which includes seven games in Russia.

He is currently holidaying with friends and family- including national and club teammate Mateo Kovacic- in him motherland, Croatia. Despite such a dedicated and coveted season, the soon to be 33 year old will cut his vacation short and return one week early. The sole reason for this is his desire to play in the UEFA Super Cup.

The match is set to be held on the 15th of August. Madrid rivals and European trophy bearer- Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid- will have a showdown in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It will be an intense clash which the World Cup’s Golden Ball winner doesn’t want to miss. His return is certainly warm news for Julen Lorpetegui who would love the FIFA- The Best Player award candidate’s presence in his squad.

Real Madrid flew to the United States today to play three pre-season friendlies. The squad of 32 players did not include Luka Modric, but the Croatian will be back on the 9th of August when the team returns to their first training in Madrid following the US trip. He will be joined by Casemiro, Varane and Kovacic.

His charisma and leadership are qualities that deserve sheer respect. Despite being a highly senior figure but not yet captain, he is ready to return early by identifying the team’s situation. His idea of giving his all and retiring with Real is clear.

“I have two years left on my contract with Madrid,” he declared a few months ago.

“I have always said that I would like to finish my career at Madrid.”

By that time he will be 35, yet the roadmap continues for him to hang up his boots in the white number 10 with Modric on the back.
