Man Utd News: Former Red Devils player confirms new Director of Football of Manchester United on Twitter

Manchester United’s new Director of Football is Darren Fletcher according to former Manchester United player.

Manchester United are trying to aid a buffer between the manager and the board after committing an abundance of mistakes over the last few years. Things have not panned out well since Ed Woodward was appointed as the Vice Chairman in 2012. In order to reduce the oversight, the board have decided to appoint the Director of Football for the first time.

Rivals Manchester City appointed Txiki Begiristain as sporting director in 2012 and have enjoyed overwhelming success in that period. As they look to follow the footprints of their rival club, the Red Devils have decided to appoint their former midfielder Darren Fletcher as the new Director of Football, according to the former defender John O’Kane.

Darren Fletcher hung up his boots with Stoke City last summer after having a two-year stint with Stoke City. But, he could be set to join his old club in a different role.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently retained the services of Mike Phelan, who was appointed as the assistant manager yesterday. The Norwegian International has claimed that his negotiations with Ed Woodward have proceeded smoothly as they strive to find a new director of football.

“Football has changed and the structure at football clubs has changed.

“Me and Ed and Joel for that matter are of course looking to how can this club run as smoothly and as well as possible.

“So we’ll see what the club will end up with and I’m happy discussing football with knowledgeable in the right positions anyway.” said Solskjaer.

Darren Fletcher played for Manchester United between 2013 and 2015, winning several trophies in that period. Even though he enjoyed success with the club, some fans have expressed their discontentment on this appointment.

Here’s how Twitter reacted..

What’s next?

Manchester United will play Cardiff City at Old Trafford in the final day of the Premier League on Sunday. The Red Devils are inevitable to finish sixth in the league table and Solskjaer will be running in for a busy summer window as they strive to improve the squad.
