Martin Odegaard provided an Ozil like assist in the La Liga match yesterday. The young Norwegian has continued his rich vein of form for Real Sociedad.

At 15 years of age, Martin Odegaard announced himself to the world as a wonderkid unlike the world had ever seen. Clubs lined up to secure his signatures tying him to their club. At the end though Real Madrid prevailed in signing the teenager.

However, in the years since, Odegaard has failed to break into Real Madrid’s first team. He has only played once for Los Blancos and was quickly dismissed as a failure by many. It is hardly the Norwegian’s fault though.

When someone as seasoned as 2014’s golden boot winner James Rodriguez finds it hard to nail a spot in the playing XI regularly, it is cruel to deem a far younger player a failure for his inability to do the same.

Odegaard has spent his last 3 seasons on loan and is now catching a second wind through his time with Real Sociedad where he was recently named their player of the month.

The midfielder has already scored 2 goals for them and looks set to continue his blistering form with the club. Last night in the match against Alaves, he provided an early assist of the season contender to set their first goal.

In the 19th minute of the match, Odegaard collected the ball close to the oppositions box. He then delivered a near perfect pass to Mikel Oyarzabal. The ball would even go and nutmeg an opposition in the process. Oyarzabal then placed the ball into the net with no mistake to break the deadlock.

The pass was reminiscent of Mesut Ozil’s pass to Saed Kolasinac that was eventually converted by Aubameyang in the game against Burnley.

Odegaard may still find it hard to become a force in Madrid. However, if he continues to perform like this, it is only a matter of time before he becomes a starter for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
