The Argentine has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in football. There’s another record Lionel Messi can break this month in La Liga.
Lionel Messi and records have been synonymous to each other in the recent past. The Argentine overtook Gerd Muller earlier this year to become the highest goalscorer for a single club in league football.
With four goals in the first three matches of the new season, the Argentine star is the leading goalscorer of La Liga at the moment.
This month, Barcelona are currently scheduled to play five La Liga matches. And this gives Messi a great chance to break another league record at Barcelona.
Messi has won 319 league matches for Barcelona so far, and is only four wins behind Xavi Hernandez, who holds the record for most wins with Barcelona.
The legendary midfielder was the product of La Masia, and played at Barcelona for 17 years, making 505 league appearances for the club, before moving to Qatar-based side Al Sadd.
At present, the record with most wins in the history of Spanish top flight is with Iker Casillas. The legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper has won 334 wins with the Spanish giants, before signing for Portuguese side FC Porto.
At second comes Andoni Zubizarreta, who played for three different clubs in the league, with 333 wins. Former Spanish forward and Iker Casillas’ teammate at Real Madrid, Raul holds the third position.
If Lionel Messi enjoys another title-winning campaign at Barcelona, it might well be possible for him to become the player with most La Liga wins in history this season.
Barcelona are currently at the top of the La Liga table with 9 points from their first three matches. Real Madrid are second, while Atletico Madrid, with four points, stand at 10th.
