England had no business winning this match but they did and they have Ben Stokes to thank for that. They were down and out at 286-9. However, the all rounder braved a tough Aussie bowling line up to stage a comeback and ultimately level the series 1-1.

England’s World Cup hero was at it once again as he rose from the Ashes (Get it?) like a phoenix, leaving team Australia to burn in his flames. However, luck played a little part in helping them reach there. With just two runs required and one wicket left, there was tremendous pressure on both sides.
Nathan Lyon bowled one just outside the off stump. Stokes reverse swept the ball but found a fielder. England’s no.11 Jack Leach took off without a second thought. The fielder quickly gathered the ball and threw it towards Nathan Lyon. All the off spinner had to do now, was to grab the ball and take the bails off.

Replay this scenario a hundred times more and Nathan Lyon will get it right a hundred and one times. Today though, it was England’s day. Lyon failed to hold on the ball as it smacked his palms and escaped. All Lyon could do afterwards, was watch Leach make his way back safely.
Ben Stokes is making heroics a habit. This match will go down as one of the best test matches in the world, on par with the Ashes 2005 Edgbaston match and the India Australia 2001 Kolkata test. England will now hope to carry the momentum forward and take a lead in the 4th test match.
