"I like this play-in tournament": Warriors' Stephen Curry throws his weight behind this year's revamped playoff format

Unlike many other stars in the league, Warriors superstar Stephen Curry likes the opportunity the newly added play-in tournament provides.

Due to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the league had to make several changes since the outburst. We saw last season getting concluded at the Orlando Bubble, this year has a shortened 72-game season, no fans, and the introduction of the play-in tournament.

The play-in tournament is something that the league decided to incorporate to make up for a shortened season. Thanks to this, teams till the 10th seed have a shot at making the playoffs.

Many NBA players, coaches and owners have given their thoughts on this new addition. Stephen Curry, whose team is currently in the 9th spot, admitted that this tournament gave the whole league a new opportunity. In an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, Curry said:

“I like the opportunity that’s in front of us. We have an opportunity to make this season mean something down the stretch because of the play-in. The opportunity of peaking at the right time. I’m sure there are gonna be a lot of opinions on it, and we’ll see how it plays out. But I’m with it.”

Stephen Curry has different opinions than his teammate Draymond Green about a play-in tournament

Earlier this past week, Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic said he didn’t “understand the idea of a play-in” and “doesn’t see the point” of conducting a tournament of such sort. Doncic and his Mavs are currently at the 7th spot in the West.

Ideally, they would be in the playoffs without having to play the play-in, if it wasn’t for the new addition. Of course, if Luka was probably in Curry’s position, his reactions too could be as that of Steph’s.

The Golden State Warriors have lately been on a good roll. The team has won their last four matches and have been in good form. However, Warriors forward Draymond Green had different opinions from his fellow teammate and coach.

The Warriors would probably be out of the playoffs in a conventional season. But thanks to the play-in tournament, they have a great shot at making it into the postseason.

With a record of 28-28, Golden State is only 1 game behind the 8th seed Memphis Grizzlies. Having only 16 games left in the regular season, Curry and his Warriors will aim to clinch that playoff spot.
