“I want Russell Westbrook to break my triple-double record”: Oscar Robertson compliments the Wizards star for his competitive streak and elite mentality
Oscar Robertson is rooting on Russell Westbrook to break his triple double record and says Westbrook is wrongfully criticized for how he plays.
Russell Westbrook is most certainly one of the most polarizing players the NBA has seen, grace their hardwoods in the past 20 years. There is an entire faction of basketball fans who simply go off the eye test and claim that Russ is one of the best to have ever played in this league while others go by the analytics and condemn his absurd usage rates and inefficiencies.
Russell Westbrook has become synonymous with the word, “Triple-double” as he’s been averaging one for the past 3 seasons with this 2020-21 NBA season marking his 4th straight. With averages of 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists a night on the year, the Jordan athlete is inching closer and closer to obliterating the all-time triple doubles record that was set by Oscar Robertson back in the 60s.
With yet another triple double last night in a crucial OT win over the Toronto Raptors, Westbrook is merely 2 triple doubles away from breaking Oscar’s record of 181 as he notched his 180th against the Raps.
Oscar Robertson is a Russell Westbrook fan and wants him to break his record.
Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook have shared several moments together, including the latter’s 2017 MVP coronation where the Big O handed Russ his MVP trophy. It’s no surprise that Oscar is 100% all-in on Russell Westbrook breaking his own record of all-time triple doubles, as he elaborated on it in an interview with Marc Stein.
“I totally enjoy the way Westbrook plays. He’s a dynamic individual. They’ve moved him around to different teams and I don’t know why because he’s one of the star guards in basketball. I guess they though when he got to Washington he would not be that effective but man, he’s done a tremendous job.”
The one and only Oscar Robertson, in a conversation with the @nytimes, explains how little fuss people made about triple-doubles when he was racking them up and says of Russell Westbrook: “I totally enjoy the way Westbrook plays.” @NYTSports coverage: https://t.co/wcrRA63Zjw

“There’s no doubt that I’m rooting for Russell Westbrook to break my triple double record. I think he’s one of the elite guards in basketball, and I think it’s ridiculous that some sportswriters criticize him because he has not won a championship yet. Players don’t win championship by themselves.”
With the Wizards having 5 games left on the season, the Bullet legend will be granted his wish as it feels impossible that Russ won’t break the record by the time this regular season comes to a close.
