“Kevin Durant Now? Uh Number 11?”: Stephen Curry Revealed How Drake Hilariously Disrespected Klay Thompson 7 Years Ago
In 2016, Kevin Durant made the controversial move to the Golden State Warriors. It was a signing, that made the Dubs immediate favorites, considering the Slim Reaper would be paired with the greatest shooter of all time Stephen Curry. But, his arrival also brought a few laughs to the Warriors’ locker room. As Steph revealed on The Old Man and the Three, KD signing for Golden State 7 years ago, inevitably led to disrespect falling on Klay Thompson. Seeing as rapper Drake forgot who he was thanks to the stacked roster.
It has been five years since Durant left the Warriors. However, he is still remembered as an iconic part of that once-dangerous team. So much so, that UNDISPUTED analyst Skip Bayless claimed the Baby-Faced assassin begged him to return to the team last season. A claim that hasn’t been validated by any reputable source.
Stephen Curry recalls how Kevin Durant’s arrival to the Warriors led to Drake unintentionally disrespecting Klay Thompson
Kevin Durant’s move to the Golden State Warriors rocked the NBA. The Slim Reaper turned the Dubs into a perennial contender. However, his arrival also saw some of the team’s other stars fall under his shadow. In particular, the first few days saw Klay Thompson step out of the limelight.
In fact, Stephen Curry explained this situation perfectly on JJ Redick’s podcast. Sharing a story, Curry spoke about how some of the Warriors’ stars attended a Drake concert a few days after KD’s signing. As the rapper performed, he took a break to talk to the audience. And, as he did, he noticed Steph and the other players in the crowd.
This led to him unintentionally disrespecting Klay, a top-four three-point shooter in NBA history. Seeing the players in the crowd, Champagne Papi commented on how stacked the Dubs are after Durant’s arrival. However, while he did name-drop Steph, Draymond Green, and KD, he struggled to remember Thompson’s name and instead referred to him simply as No.11.
“So Drake’s performing and gets on this like…lift that takes him around the arena to the fans and have that moment. So, as he’s going around, he sees us down there but doesn’t really acknowledge it. He goes past and says, “Yo we in the Oracle Arena…it’s crazy how the champs…you know it was a tough year…Man y’all got Steph, Draymond…KD (Kevin Durant) now! Uh…uh number 11?”. So we all start laughing cause he was just in the moment. My brother was with us. So Seth’s with us and after we get in the car and he’s like, “Man! Y’all cheating! Cause the fact that Drake doesn’t know Klay’s name!”. That was my favorite!”
It is a hilarious story. And just one example of the playful beef Aubrey has with the second Splash Brother. But, at the end of the day, the Warriors found great success, seeing as the combo of Steph, KD, Klay, and Draymond went on to win two consecutive championships together, before falling to Drake’s Toronto Raptors in 2019.
Drake greatly influenced Steph’s legacy by dubbing him Chef Curry with his 2016 song 0 to 100
Drake and Stephen Curry are great friends, and the latter has played a huge role in determining Curry’s legacy. The rapper is responsible for handing the nickname “Chef Curry” to the four-time NBA Champion. In his 2016 song 0 to 100, he dropped the line, “Been cookin’ with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot”.
Thus, dubbing Steph the Chef because of how he cooked defenses with his incredible ball handling, finishing, and three-point shooting skills.
Steph has really taken the Chef Curry monicker in stride. Not only does he continue to cook opponents, but he does so without breaking a sweat. Making the Warriors a force to be reckoned with always.
