Apr 9, 2025; Dallas, Texas, USA; Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick and guard Luka Doncic (77) during the game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers at American Airlines Center.

JJ Redick’s addition to the Los Angeles Lakers as head coach ahead of the 2024–25 season truly made the fanbase believe that big things were on the horizon. Redick was coaching LeBron James, arguably the GOAT, until Luka Doncic, the future face of the NBA, also came in, adding even more star power. He quickly embraced the Purple and Gold culture and made it clear that his top priority was leading the franchise to another championship.

The Lakers failed to get past the Timberwolves in the playoffs earlier this year, but there was reason for optimism. During the offseason, they added DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart, whose presence should make life more comfortable for Doncic.

That wasn’t the only upgrade. Luka became a national story after shedding a significant amount of weight and putting on plenty of muscle. His commitment to Los Angeles mirrors Redick’s. Both men share the same vision of bringing the franchise back to its winning roots, especially after signing contract extensions. It’s clear they’re completely aligned in their mission.

During NBA media day, Doncic spoke very highly about his head coach and how much his swagger speaks to him and his teammates. He also admitted that he is very stoked about Redick getting a new contract.

“I like about everything it,” the Slovenian stated when asked about his favorite JJ qualities. “The way he communicates with us, with me, with the whole team. The way he studies the game playing. The way he approaches the game. There are so many things good about him that I’m very excited he got extended so I can be on his team.”

The feeling is clearly mutual. Luka and Redick have a history as teammates, spending a few months in 2021 together at the Dallas Mavericks. Redick addressed this in his first press conference when the Slovenian superstar joined the Lakers earlier this year.

“Luke and I were teammates. I’d say we had a friendship. Mutual respect. You then have to figure out how to have a working relationship as player/coach. I’m excited to build that,” JJ stated at the time.

The bond between Doncic and Redick feels like the foundation of something bigger than just a season. With the roster reloaded, the team culture reset, and a clear vision in place, the Lakers seem poised to reclaim their spot among the NBA elite.

The journey won’t be easy, but with Doncic’s hunger and JJ’s leadership, fans have every reason to believe that Hollywood might be gearing up for its next great basketball blockbuster.
