“Luka Doncic is not a fan of Mavs’ shadow GM”: Mark Cuban torn between his franchise player and team executive
Luka Doncic is feuding with a ‘Shadow GM’ at the Dallas Mavericks front office. This has raised questions over his future near Fort Worth.
The Dallas Mavericks have been marred with controversies in the current season of the NBA. They started when the Mavs were eliminated by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the Playoffs. Despite Luka Doncic’s best efforts, Rick Carlisle’s men blew out a 2-0 lead over the Clippers.
There were criticisms over Kristaps Porzingis who had a very off series. KP is the second highest paid player for the Mavs and people expected him to support Doncic. But he simply did not turn up against the Clippers and the Mavs got eliminated in Game 7.
While there were a lot of speculation regarding Porzingis future. Regarding Doncic and Porzingis’ relationship after the elimination and also regarding Carlisle’s coaching. The controversies kept coming as the Mavs were in the news for quite some time even after their elimination.
But there is a genuine problem at Dallas Mavericks which involves their talisman Luka Doncic. The 22-year-old has some issues with Haralabos Voulgaris who is a sort of ‘Shadow GM’ at Dallas. These are according to reports on The Athletic. Voulgaris along with Mark Cuban and his right-hand man Donnie Nelson form the Mavs front office. He is one of the most influential people in the organisation.
The souring relationship between Luka Doncic and Voulgaris has raised concerns
Doncic’s sour relationship with Voulgaris has raised concern over his long term future at the franchise. Voulgaris joined the Mavs in 2018 as a director of quantitative research and development.
According to The Athletic, he plays an important role at the front office. Starting from making important transactions to even scripting starting lineups and rotation to Carlisle.
The Slovenian is not a fan of Voulgaris and so are some of the other people at the organisation. But Cuban has defended him with his statement to The Athletic.
However, there are chances that Voulgaris will leave the Mavs with his contract expiring this summer. The Mavs should put Doncic’s wish on priority and if he wants then they will not extend Voulgaris’ contract.
The whole tension around the front office is not ideal especially when the Mavs want to forge a long term relationship with their talisman Luka Doncic.
The Slovenian is set to sign the supermax contract which will pay him more than $200 million over five seasons. But the Mavs should not take this for granted as they need to build a Championship winning team.
