When will the NBA MVP be announced?

Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and James Harden were announced as the 3 finalists of the NBA MVP award voting on 8th August. When will the announcement be made?

The NBA announced before the resumption of the NBA season that the awards this year would be limited to the games played before the shutdown on 11th March.

This gave a significant edge to the players who started the season off strong in terms of getting voted for the end-of-season awards.

The likes of Bradley Beal, who have been injured since March, now stand a chance to make an All-NBA team.

The winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award was announced a few days back. Giannis won his first DPOY award in a landslide vote, as he took 75 of the 100 first-place votes.

Brandon Ingram then won the ‘Most Improved Player’ award and yesterday, Ja Morant was handed the ‘Rookie of the year’ award.

The Grizzlies star won in a landslide victory, securing 99 out of the 100 first place votes.

Today, NBA announced the 6th man of the year award, and Montrezl Harrell won it ahead of Lou Williams and Dennis Schroder. It is refreshing to see a player who is not a guard finally win after so many years.

When will the NBA MVP be announced?

The NBA has announced two of its major awards post the boycott. And with Giannis Anteokounmpo dishing out sub-par performances in the playoffs, the NBA will love to wrap up the MVP announcement in the next few days.

With Bucks being 2-0 down against Heat and so many questions being raised over Giannis’ impact during the playoffs, the MVP announcement should ideally happen tomorrow, before the Bucks maybe go 3-0 down in the series.

But if not tomorrow, the NBA would certainly make the announcement a day before game 4 of the Bucks-Heat series.

Now, the NBA will need to do this before Game 4, as Giannis is all but sure to win the award and they would want him to be in the Bubble to be able to receive the applause.

NBA MVP announcement 2020: Giannis Antetokounmpo or LeBron James?

Going by all the signs so far, Giannis is likely to complete the MVP-DPOY double this year. Odds on him winning the MVP shortened significantly with the NBA’s announcement of the 64-game voting sample. LeBron James is likely to finish second and James Harden third.

Giannis went into the NBA bubble averaging 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game in less than 31 minutes per game.

If awarded, he will become the player with the lowest average floor time to ever win the MVP award. The previous record is held by Steph Curry, who averaged 30 points per game on less than 33 minutes per game in 2015-16.
