“She won an Open when pregnant”: Dwyane Wade pinpoints his exact reasons for considering Serena Williams as the greatest athlete of all time over Michael Jordan, Tom Brady
Dwyane Wade enunciated a well-formulated case for Serena Williams as the greatest athlete of all time on TNT last night.
The TNT studios were abuzz last night with a change in crew. The Tuesday crew of D-Wade and Candace Parker came in for the usual quartet of Ernie, Kenny, Chuck and Shaq. This led to a change in the focus of the show as it became more serious and sports-centered than ribbing one another.
This didn’t mean there were no comic moments at all, though. D-Wade committed a bad gaffe 3 times in a row on the night, addressing Lonzo Ball by the name of ‘Alonzo’.
D-Wade and Candace also contributed with some nuance to this discussion about the GOAT of GOATs. This debate has come alive ever since Tom Brady secured his 7th Super Bowl on Sunday evening.
Dwyane Wade explains why Serena Williams is the GOAT athlete
D-Wade made this statement in support of Serena Williams when the discussion of the greatest athletes ever came up:
“First of all, we’re having a conversation about greatness. You can close your eyes and pick one, right? So I love Tom Brady as a quarterback, right, but I can’t make the GOAT someone who plays just one side of the ball. So I look at basketball, a GOAT is not someone who’s an offensive player, a GOAT is someone overall.”
“So for me, in the question that you asked, ‘Who’s the head of the table?’ in the room for GOAT, I go Serena Williams. Because she’s the woman in the room, and everybody else in the room will have respect for her and make sure she stays there. But, let’s go down the numbers.”

“23 majors, 30+ finals. She was no. 1 at the end of the year 5 years in a row. She has 358 career wins, Olympic medal, and here’s the biggest thing – she won an Open while pregnant.”
D-Wade has a great case here, but one could argue that there are a few female athletes who’re above even her. Simone Biles, for instance, has bagged over 30 Olympic and World Championship medals through her career. Steffi Graf had an arguably higher tennis peak than anyone else. Both these women have a real claim for the title of ‘GOAT of GOATs’, but aren’t talked about nearly as often.
